Finding ways to do good
There are many ways brands and companies can make a difference for the planet. For a digital marketing agency such as hafferi, one way of doing that is to partner with companies that share our values regarding environmental protection and social justice. There is another way of doing good: donating, plain and simple. What could be more efficient than financially empowering the causes and organizations we feel strongly about?
We firmly believe that those who profit from the Earth’s resources should do their absolute best to preserve and protect those resources from extinction. This is why we, in January, officially became proud members of 1% for the Planet, one of the most engaging environmental initiatives in the world today, among businesses and individuals alike.
What is 1% for the Planet?
1% for the Planet is a network of people and organizations who are creative, innovative, passionate, and who share a love and a drive to protect the planet. It provides two membership programs, one for businesses and the other for individuals. In both of them, members pledge to donate 1% of their annual salary (individuals) or their gross sales (companies) to a chosen environmental nonprofit. Individuals can also volunteer.
Through partnership advising, 1% for the Planet pairs its members with environmental nonprofits that align with their values, driving the most powerful impact possible. It also certifies all of its members’ donations, legitimizing their commitment by reviewing and confirming sales and donation details every year. It’s all about driving smart environmental giving.
How it all started
1% for the Planet was created in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. The two businessmen bonded over their love for the outdoors and realized they should step up to help protect the planet. Therefore, they decided to give 1% of their sales back to environmental causes—regardless of their companies’ profits.
In the words of Yvon Chouinard: “The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.”
1% for the Planet is a global, diverse network made out of all kinds of companies and individuals that want to make a difference in the world. One of its most prominent individual members is singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, who joined the movement in 2004 to protect the shores of Hawaii, his home state. Among the member companies are Patagonia, Brushfire Records, Klean Kanteen, New Belgium Brewing, Honest Tea, Caudalie, Pukka, and many others.
Today, 1% for the Planet has more than 3,000 members coming together to protect the planet’s future. Since the movement’s beginning, it has certified more than $250 million in support to approved environmental nonprofits. Last January, hafferi was one of 315 new members announced by 1% for the Planet – 146 from the U.S. alone.
Says Jorge Rodrigo Martins, CEO and founder of hafferi:
Being a member of 1% for the Planet was a natural move for hafferi. By helping our partners to reach donors, volunteers, and benefactors, we understand how hard the struggle is and what a difference every little gesture makes for their causes. We walk the walk, in every way possible.
